>> The day culminated with the opening at the Barceló Foundation of “Engraving Workshops”, an international exhibition with works by 101 student artists from the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk (Poland) and ADEMA Fine Arts.
The ADEMA University School brought together universities, art schools, academic institutions and professionals from the art sector in Europe and the United States in Palma on May 28 and 29 for the V International Art Week, an event focused on educational excellence, research, the professionalization of creators, new trends in contemporary art and international collaboration.
The day included the meeting of the international working group of ELIA, European League of Institutes of the Arts, one of the leading European networks for Higher Art Education and artistic research; the Contemporary Art Talks with representatives of international institutions; the presentation of the CYANOTYPES project: Strategic Skills for Creative Futures; and the opening of an international printmaking exhibition at the Barceló Foundation.
The International Art Week has addressed lines of work related to new contemporary practices, critical thinking, strategic skills for creative industries, artistic professionalization and internationalization in Fine Arts.
One of the main focuses of the program has been the meeting of the ELIA Future Readiness Working Group, which began today and will continue until tomorrow, May 29. This working group is analyzing the capacity of higher education art institutions to respond to the cultural, social, technological, and professional changes affecting the creative sector, as well as the need to strengthen collaborative networks among international institutions.
ELIA brings together around 280 members in 54 countries and is considered one of the leading international networks in the field of higher arts education, artistic research, and inter-institutional cooperation. Its presence at International Art Week reinforces the academic dimension of the event and connects ADEMA with European debates on the future of arts education.
Representatives from institutions such as Princeton University, Chelsea College of Arts of the University of the Arts London, University of Arts and Design in Cluj Napoca, Royal Danish Academy, Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk, HKU University of the Arts Utrecht, dieAngewandte, University of Arts in Belgrade, Aalto University, Sint Lucas Antwerpen, Zurich University of the Arts, Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts HSLU and the University of Malaga.
During the afternoon, the Contemporary Art Talks took place, focusing on trends, critical thinking, and current practices. The presentations addressed issues related to the evolution of contemporary art, new visual languages, artistic research, critical thinking, the relationship between creation and technology, and current practices in the academic and professional spheres.
To close the day, the international exhibition “Printmaking Workshops” opened at the Barceló Foundation. This exhibition brings together works by 101 student artists from the Faculty of Graphic Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk and ADEMA University School. The exhibition will be open to the public until June 12 at the foundation’s headquarters, located at Carrer de Sant Jaume, 4, in Palma, as part of Art Palma Summer.
The exhibition stems from an academic collaboration between the two institutions and proposes an interpretation of printmaking as a meeting point between two contexts of artistic training: Gdańsk (Poland) and Palma. The project transforms the traditional format of academic review, usually conceived as an internal evaluation process within the university community, into an act of public opening. The works created within the educational process thus leave the studio space to engage with new audiences, new contexts, and new ways of interpreting them.
The works presented in the exhibition were created during the educational process in five workshops of the Faculty of Graphic Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk: Lithography, Linocut, Screen Printing, Intaglio Printmaking, and the Post-Digital Workshop, as well as in the corresponding workshops at ADEMA Fine Arts. Each of these workshops constitutes its own world: its technique, its tradition, and its way of thinking about materials and images. The works presented here rarely leave the walls of the institutions where they were created. This time, they cross the borders of institutions, cities, and countries to come together in one place. In addition, a hybrid work combining printmaking and ceramics is on display, created through research using modern laser cutting technology.
It arises from the deep conviction that the artist-teacher does not teach only in the workshop or next to the printing press; he teaches, above all, through his way of acting: how he seeks contact with others, how he crosses the limits of his own environment, how he builds relationships beyond geographical and institutional divisions.
The exhibition is curated by Vasyl Savchenko and Xisco Duarte, with Magdalena Świerczek as assistant curator. Dan Norton coordinates the project, and Aleksandra Roszkowska designed the poster.
The program will conclude tomorrow, Friday, May 29, with the graduation ceremony of the first class of the Bachelor of Fine Arts at ADEMA, which will be held at 7:00 p.m. at Es Baluard Museu d’Art Contemporani de Palma.
