The Governing Council has approved today the establishment of two new faculties linked to the University of Mallorca: the Faculty of Medical Sciences and the Polytechnic Faculty. Both structures will enable the organization of the institution’s future academic activity in strategic fields such as medical sciences, architecture, design, engineering, social sciences, and the arts, among others.

The Faculty of Medical Sciences will coordinate academic programs in Medicine, Biomedicine, Biomedical and Health Engineering, Speech Therapy, Dentistry, and Human Nutrition and Dietetics, while the Polytechnic Faculty will house studies related to Architecture, Design, Data Engineering, Sociology, Sports Business Management, and Political Science and Public Administration.

In parallel, ADEMA has launched the Health Sciences Research Center and the Architecture, Art, and Social Sciences Research Center.

The University of Mallorca was founded with the aim of becoming an institution closely connected to society, committed to the sustainable development of the Balearic Islands, and open to the Mediterranean and international spheres. Its primary objective will be to expand its higher education offerings through new bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree programs in strategic sectors—areas characterized by high social and professional demand that, in many cases, are not currently available on the islands.

Faculty of Medical Sciences: health-related degrees, laboratories, clinical simulation, and campus in Es Coll d’en Rabassa.

The Faculty of Medical Sciences was established with the aim of strengthening higher education, research, and innovation in the biomedical and health sector in the Balearic Islands. The new faculty is structured as an integrated academic unit that will bring together degree programs linked to the health sciences and facilitate the shared use of teaching, clinical, and research resources.

Academically, the faculty will initially offer programs in Medicine, Biomedicine, Biomedical and Health Engineering, Speech Therapy, Dentistry (in Spanish and English), and Human Nutrition and Dietetics. This academic offering will be complemented by a University Master’s Degree in Oral Health Engineering and by doctoral programs focused on generating advanced knowledge in the Health Sciences.

The Faculty of Medical Sciences will be located at the Coll d’en Rabassa Campus. The facilities span 3,500 square meters and are equipped to accommodate academic activities for the planned bachelor’s degrees, the master’s degree, and the doctoral program in health sciences.

The building will feature ten classrooms, two seminar rooms, nine laboratories, and other complementary spaces. It will include lecture halls, clinical classrooms, seminar and conference rooms, specialized laboratories for practical training and research, a library, clinical simulation spaces, faculty workspaces, and dedicated areas for research projects. The laboratories will be equipped for basic science practicals, healthcare simulation, 3D diagnostics, image processing, haptic virtual reality, simulation mannequins, hospital equipment, microscopes, autoclaves, culture incubators, 3D printers, and digital teaching support resources.

The faculty will also feature a virtual campus equipped with technological and educational resources to support in-person instruction and the development of hybrid or blended learning models. This infrastructure will provide access to teaching materials, assessment activities, communication tools, academic tracking, and collaborative learning environments.

Polytechnic Faculty: Architecture, Design, Engineering, Social Sciences, workshops, and campus in Inca.

The Polytechnic Faculty will focus on education, research, and knowledge transfer in the fields of architecture, engineering, design, and applied social sciences. Its creation addresses the need to expand and diversify university offerings in areas strategic to the development of the Balearic Islands, particularly in sectors linked to digital transformation, sustainability, urban and territorial planning, public management, design, and business innovation.

Academically, the faculty will initially offer programs in Architecture, Design, Sociology, Data Engineering, Sports Business Management, and Political Science and Public Administration. Plans for the Inca building also include a degree in Video Game Design and a double degree in Sociology and Data Engineering.

The postgraduate offering will include the Master’s in Architecture and the Master’s in Product Design, as well as doctoral programs linked to Architecture, Art, and Social Sciences. The Architecture and Design undergraduate degrees, along with the Master’s in Architecture, will be taught in an in-person format due to their practical, design-oriented, and workshop-based components. Studies in Sociology, Political Science and Public Administration, Sports Business Management, and Data Engineering, as well as the Master’s in Product Design, will be conducted in a hybrid or blended learning format.

The Polytechnic Faculty will be based in Inca in a building—a former shoe factory—offering 1,300 square meters of space. It features five classrooms, two seminar rooms, two workshops, and other complementary areas. The facilities include multi-purpose classrooms, collaborative workspaces, design and architecture workshops, computer labs, a library, faculty areas, and spaces dedicated to research and knowledge transfer.

The teaching spaces have been designed with a flexible approach, featuring classrooms and workshops that can adapt to various teaching and learning methodologies. The center includes classrooms separated by movable partitions, multi-purpose workshops for practical activities, seminar rooms for small groups, research areas, offices for management and academic administration, guidance and educational support services, administrative offices, a teaching materials storage area, and high-speed Wi-Fi connectivity.

The faculty will also feature a fully equipped virtual campus designed to support in-person instruction and ensure the delivery of degree programs in a hybrid or blended format. This platform will provide access to teaching materials, assessment activities, communication tools, academic progress tracking, and collaborative learning environments.

Two research centers

Meanwhile, ADEMA has spearheaded the launch of two dedicated research centers. The Health Sciences Research Center will focus on consolidating and expanding scientific activity in the fields of Dentistry, Nutrition, Health Promotion, non-communicable diseases, Medicine, Biomedicine, Health Engineering, Speech Therapy, and Applied Clinical Research. Its facilities will be located in Son Rossinyol and Es Coll d’en Rabassa.

Meanwhile, the Center for Research in Architecture, Art, and Social Sciences will conduct research, artistic, innovation, and knowledge-transfer activities in the fields of the arts, architecture, design, and social sciences. It will incorporate areas of study related to contemporary art, visual culture, heritage, public space, design, technologies applied to creative work, video games, visual narratives, cultural analysis, and public policy. Its facilities will be distributed between Son Rossinyol and Inca.
