The Rector of the University of Mallorca (UMAC-ADEMA), Dr. Pere Riutord, paid an institutional visit to the Managing Director of the Sant Joan de Déu Palma-Inca Hospital, Jaume Morell, as part of the schedule of institutional engagements the new university is developing with strategic entities in the Balearic Islands.
The hospital’s medical director, Dr. Nicolás Flaquer, and the center’s physician and ADEMA professor, Dr. Jesús Álvarez, also participated in the meeting.
During the meeting, the rector presented the academic and institutional project for the Universitat de Mallorca (UMAC-ADEMA), an initiative launched with the aim of becoming a leading university in the islands through a teaching model connected to professional reality, the promotion of research and innovation, and ongoing collaboration with the healthcare, scientific, and business sectors.
Representatives from both institutions exchanged views on the current challenges facing the healthcare system and the role the new institution plays in training future professionals, highlighting the need to strengthen synergies between healthcare facilities and the academic sector.
In this regard, the value of collaboration between hospitals and universities has been highlighted for its role in enhancing clinical training, fostering the development of research projects, driving knowledge transfer, and contributing to the continuous improvement of healthcare.
The future academic offerings of the Universitat de Mallorca will include programs in the Health Sciences—such as Medicine, Biomedicine, Biomedical and Health Engineering, Speech Therapy, Dentistry (also offered in English), and Human Nutrition and Dietetics—creating a curriculum designed to meet the sector’s current and future demands.
