The Rector of the Universitat de Mallorca (UMAC-ADEMA), Pere Riutord, and the manager of Creu Roja Hospitals in Palma, Dr. Xim Torrebella, held an institutional meeting this morning to present the new university’s key strategic lines and address the importance of linking higher education and research with the needs of the Balearic Islands’ healthcare system.
During the meeting, Riutord presented the UMAC-ADEMA academic model, which is based on practical training, educational innovation, applied research, knowledge transfer, and collaboration with institutions, companies, hospitals, and healthcare centers.
The meeting takes place in the context of developing the new academic program at the Universitat de Mallorca, which will feature degree programs linked to the health sciences, such as Medicine, Biomedicine, Biomedical and Health Engineering, Speech Therapy, Dentistry, and Human Nutrition and Dietetics.
Both officials addressed the importance of cooperation between university institutions and hospitals in fostering students’ clinical training, advancing research projects, and meeting the healthcare, scientific, and professional needs of the Balearic region.
Creu Roja Hospitals de Palma is a non-profit hospital integrated into the public healthcare network of the Balearic Islands and established as one of Mallorca’s leading healthcare centers.
In 2021, the hospital completed a comprehensive renovation of its building and facilities, enabling the modernization of its technological equipment, the reorganization of its clinical areas, and the expansion of the healthcare services offered to the population.
It currently has a built area of 4,205 square meters distributed across three floors, as well as 74 inpatient beds and six operating rooms.
Its range of care services includes more than twenty medical specialties, alongside general radiology services, a clinical analysis laboratory, an inter-hospital pharmacy, a day center, and rehabilitation services. The hospital also features various specialized medical units.
The Creu Roja Hospital in Palma has incorporated the Toumai™ robotic surgery system—the first surgical robot of its kind to be installed in the Balearic Islands and the sixth in Spain.
The adoption of this technology marks the launch of the Spanish Red Cross’s robotic surgery program, representing a strategic commitment to technological innovation in healthcare. The implementation of the Toumai™ robot will also foster the advancement of minimally invasive, high-level surgery in the Balearic Islands, supporting the rollout of robotic surgery in the region and facilitating the ongoing training of highly specialized professionals.
The visit is part of a series of institutional meetings initiated by UMAC-ADEMA to present its university project and strengthen its relationship with key stakeholders in the health, social, economic, and scientific sectors of the Balearic Islands.
The new university proposes a model organized around a network of specialized campuses in Mallorca, featuring spaces dedicated to health sciences, clinical simulation, biomedical research, technology, design, architecture, and social sciences.
