Amparo Sard, artist and Head of Studies for the Bachelor in Fine Arts at the ADEMA University School, is presenting her “Haptic Self-Portrait” in Beijing. This work, developed using 3D haptic and holographic technology in collaboration with ADEMA specialists, is accompanied by several pieces of her large-format perforated paper. The works are part of the international exhibition “Off-Screen: Moving Image,” which opened this afternoon at the Central Academy of Fine Arts Art Museum of China (CAFAM), one of the country’s most influential cultural institutions. In this prestigious setting, Sard’s work is exhibited alongside that of renowned artists such as Pedro Almodóvar, Daniel Canogar, and Víctor Erice.
As Amparo Sard explained, “The Haptic Self-Portrait, created in collaboration with specialists from ADEMA, introduces a unique sensory experience to a leading Asian museum, transforming the relationship between viewer and artwork. Through haptic and holographic 3D simulation, the public can tactilely perceive a self-portrait created from metamatter.” The piece translates the artist’s characteristic gesture of perforated papers into virtual space, opening up an experimental territory where physical perception, digitization, and the material’s memory converge in a single aesthetic operation. Sard is also exhibiting several large-format pieces of her perforated paper.
The exhibition “Off-Screen: Moving Image” brings together an exceptional group of Spanish artists selected for their critical and expansive engagement with contemporary imagery. The show explores how audiovisual creation has transcended the traditional screen to inhabit space, the body, and sensory experience. In this vein, the inclusion of the “Haptic Self-Portrait” broadens the curatorial interpretation, introducing for the first time at CAFAM a tactile virtual artwork based on cutting-edge immersive technologies. In addition to the artists already mentioned, the exhibition features Itziar Barrio, Cabello Carceller, Patricia Esquivias, Isaki Lacuesta, Lois Patiño, Carlos Saura, and Albert Serra. The project is curated by Susana Sanz and organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation, the Embassy of Spain in China, and CAFAM.
For the artist Amparo Sard, “it is a great satisfaction to be present with our works at this opening, in such an important setting as CAFAM. It represents a significant advance in our research on perception, tactility and the limits between the visible and the experiential, since it transforms the intangible into physical experience and reformulates traditional perception through a process that combines artistic gesture, digital simulation and sensory presence.”
ADEMA has highlighted the work of Amparo Sard leading the Fine Arts Degree program, which promotes interdisciplinary experimentation, critical reflection, and the integration of emerging technologies into the creative process—aspects directly reflected in the project presented in Beijing. For ADEMA, participation in this international exhibition reinforces the center’s commitment to academic innovation, artistic research, and intercultural dialogue.
The exhibition can be visited until December 28, 2025 at the Art Museum of the Central Academy of Fine Arts of China, from Tuesday to Sunday between 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., with last access at 5:00 p.m.
