Palma, October 25, 2024 – The president of the Associació Annelise Witt – Rafael Tur Costa, Marcos Tur, presented this afternoon the creation of the Catalogue Raisonné of the Ibizan artist Rafael Tur Costa.
The project, which has the collaboration of the Consell Insular de Ibiza, the City Council of Santa Eulària des Riu and the University School ADEMA, aims to create a digital Catalogue Raisonné of the artist’s complete work, providing open and free access to all his artistic production. “This catalog is a fundamental reference work for the study of the artist’s work and its context, as it compiles and organizes all the available information of his work, detailing aspects such as dimensions, techniques, date of creation, exhibitions and bibliographical references of each piece,” detailed the scientific director of the project, Dr. Jaume Reus.
The president of the Associació Cultural Anneliese Witt – Rafael Tur Costa, Marcos Tur, thanked the Consell de Ibiza, Santa Eulària Town Hall and ADEMA University School for their collaboration. He has also expressed his satisfaction with the development of this project, in commemoration of the centenary of the artist’s birth, which provides free access to the Catalogue Raisonné not only preserving the legacy of Rafael Tur Costa, but will also serve as a valuable educational tool for future research and authentication of works. In addition, the web platform will be available in four languages: Catalan, Spanish, English and German, thus facilitating its use by the international community.
Project phases
The project is being developed in two phases. Phase 1, which began in August and will last until next November, focuses on the cataloguing of Tur Costa’s original works kept at the headquarters of the Associació Cultural Anneliese Witt – Rafael Tur Costa, as well as works in public and private collections in the Balearic Islands.
Phase 2, which will take place between January and April 2025, will catalog works scattered around the world, as well as documentation related to the artist, such as correspondence, writings, interviews and articles.
The Associació Cultural Anneliese Witt – Rafael Tur Costa will be responsible for the creation of the contents and design of the web pages of the catalog and the association. For its part, ADEMA will be responsible for the computer programming and technical maintenance of both platforms, which will allow constant updating and global access.
On the other hand, the scientific director of the project, Dr. Jaume Reus, has insisted on the importance of inviting the owners of the artist’s work to contact the Associació Cultural to include their work in the Catalogue Raisonné. “It is an attractive challenge as it requires thorough research and a rigorous approach. The possibility of having a digital and constantly updated platform is a breakthrough in the way we document and share contemporary art. The Catalogue Raisonné is a crucial tool that will allow researchers, students and the general public to better understand Tur Costa’s work,” argued Dr. Jaume Reus. The team that will carry out the project includes Catina Costa and Sílvia Poch in cataloging and photography, respectively.
The president of the Board of Trustees of the University School ADEMA, Diego González, has highlighted the importance of this scientific collaboration “that not only collects the work of the legacy of an artist as renowned as Rafael Tur Costa, but also puts in value the commitment of our academic institution with research and cultural dissemination. We are very pleased to carry out this entire project that will contribute to the preservation and dissemination of his artistic legacy, accessible to all and that will serve as a starting point for researchers, collectors, art critics and other professionals in the artistic field interested in studying the artist’s career and work”.
In addition, “the collaboration with the Associació Cultural Anneliese Witt – Rafael Tur Costa is an example of how the university and culture can collaborate and work hand in hand to enrich the artistic knowledge of our community. Promoting, editing and collaborating in the production of catalogs raisonné is one of the scientific contributions of the academic institution to strengthen the knowledge and dissemination of art in our community,” said González.
For his part, the insular director of Culture and Heritage, Miquel Costa Tur, has expressed that “to value, promote and support creativity, art and culture is a basic priority of the Department of Culture and Heritage of the Consell d’Eivissa, and to be able to share it with such vital references of insular art as the work of Anneliese Witt and Rafael Tur Costa is an opportunity that we joined from the first day that Marcos Tur and family proposed it to us”. “We are sure that this Catalogue Raisonné will be a reference to understand and expand the memory and artistic imprint of Rafael Tur Costa,” he said.
Finally, he congratulated all parties, the Association, the City Council, ADEMA, Jaume Reus, Catina Costa and Silvia Posch.
The mayor of Santa Eulària des Riu, Carmen Ferrer, explained that “Tur Costa is one of the great cultural figures of the Balearic Islands and we are immensely fortunate that he was our neighbor and that his family has decided to promote the knowledge of his work and the discovery of other great artists in the space they have created in Jesus”. “As a City Council we have the obligation to promote and protect our heritage and support this catalog is a way to achieve that goal to value some creations that are a reflection of an exceptional mind and sensitivity,” he added.
