ADEMA inaugurated this afternoon the 8th International Dental Week, an International Week of Teaching and Research in Dentistry, an academic and scientific event that will make Palma a benchmark for analyzing the advances that are transforming oral health. For five days, ADEMA will bring together experts, researchers, teachers, professionals, and students from universities and academic institutions across Europe and the United States, as well as prestigious national institutions.
The event will address some of the most current topics in the dental sector, such as artificial intelligence applied to diagnosis, haptic simulation in clinical training, oral and perilabial ultrasound, cone beam computed tomography – known as CBCT -, diode laser, dental adhesion, implantology, surgical microendodontics and the prevention of oral diseases.
During the official opening of the 8th International Dental Week, ADEMA’s CEO, Carlos López, highlighted that the celebration of this event “reinforces our commitment to innovation, research and internationalization, with the aim of bringing our students and teaching staff closer to the latest trends in the field of Dentistry.”
López emphasized that “the presence of national and international speakers in Palma allows us to consolidate a top-tier academic and professional exchange forum, aimed at improving the training, research, treatments, and tools of future oral health professionals.” In this regard, he added that “organizing this new edition represents a new challenge for the institution, but also an opportunity to continue raising the academic and research standards of ADEMA.”
Also during the inauguration, the Vice Dean of ADEMA, Pere Riutord, pointed out that the International Dental Week will bring together on our campus in Coll d’en Rabassa, leading international and national experts in the field of Dentistry, with the purpose of promoting the exchange of knowledge, specialized training and professional practice based on ethics and scientific evidence.
“Digital Dentistry 360º is the central theme of this edition, representing an increasingly connected, predictive, and minimally invasive clinical practice where clinical data, virtual simulation, augmented reality, and haptic tools will enhance both the professional and patient experience. This shift also presents a training, ethical, and technological challenge, as it demands continuous adaptation, investment, and a multidisciplinary approach to oral health,” stated Pere Riutord.
Riutord explained that the meeting will also address “highly relevant challenges, such as new digital techniques and the use of artificial intelligence for the diagnosis and treatment of dental pathologies.” He also emphasized that the event “allows us to raise the standards of dental training, promote the analysis of socially relevant issues, such as the early diagnosis of oral cancer, and reinforce a vision of the profession committed to health, science, and clinical responsibility.”
The 8th International Dental Week will feature the participation of professionals linked to institutions such as the University of Pennsylvania, the Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam, the University of Georgia, the Medical University of Lublin, the University of Oslo, the University of Turin, the University of Barcelona, the University of Valencia, the European University of Madrid, the Fernando Pessoa University of the Canary Islands and the Spanish Society of Digital Dentistry and New Technologies (SOCE Digital), among other academic, scientific and professional entities.
One of the main themes of this edition is the technological transformation of dentistry. The incorporation of new digital tools is modifying the processes of diagnosis, planning, and treatment, and enabling more precise, efficient, and personalized clinical practice.
In this context, technologies such as artificial intelligence, CBCT, advanced simulation, and digital planning systems have become priority areas for research, training, and clinical application.
Haptic simulation will also play a prominent role in the program. This technology allows students to train clinical skills in safe, repeatable, and controlled virtual environments. Through these systems, students can experience situations similar to those encountered in real-world practice, develop manual dexterity, improve accuracy, and strengthen their decision-making skills before direct patient contact. The program includes haptic simulator competitions on May 11th and 13th.
Oral and perilabial ultrasound will be another area of focus in this edition. Its application in dentistry allows for obtaining structural information about tissues and is especially useful in contexts such as cosmetic dentistry, treatment planning, and the preliminary assessment of certain treatments. The planned sessions will address the possibilities of ultrasonography in dental practice, as well as its advantages, limitations, and clinical applications.
The diode laser will also be analyzed from both a scientific and practical perspective. The program includes a presentation on its clinical applications and current evidence, as well as a workshop focused on its use in dental practice. These sessions will provide an in-depth look at a technology that is increasingly prevalent in certain procedures due to its potential for minimally invasive treatments.
The 8th International Dental Week will also focus on other key areas of the profession, such as ceramic restorations, dental adhesion, oral epidemiology, prevention of oral diseases, implantology, advanced anatomy, endodontically treated tooth restoration, osteoimmunology applied to dental practice, apical microsurgery and modern surgical microendodontics.
Beyond technological innovation, the meeting will address the ethical and professional dimensions of dental practice. In a context where patients are increasingly informed and the clinical relationship is more regulated, ADEMA emphasizes the importance of training professionals who are not only technically qualified, but also committed to principles such as patient autonomy, adequate information, informed consent, and uncoerced decision-making.
