The University of Mallorca and the Official College of Architects of the Balearic Islands (COAIB) have signed an institutional collaboration agreement with the aim of strengthening academic training, research and knowledge transfer in the field of architecture and urban planning in the Balearic Islands.
The agreement, which was signed this morning by the president of ADEMA, Diego González, and the dean of COAIB, Bernat Nadal Alemany, establishes a framework for cooperation between both institutions for the development of joint actions of an academic, cultural and educational nature.
The agreement stems from the recognition of shared objectives between the University of Mallorca and the COAIB (Official Association of Architects of the Balearic Islands), particularly regarding the promotion of architectural culture, the continuous improvement of higher education, and the strengthening of ties between academia and professional practice. In this sense, the agreement aims to foster university education connected to the social, cultural, and professional realities of the region.
One of the main aspects of the agreement is shared access to bibliographic and documentary resources. From its entry into force, students enrolled in undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs at the University of Mallorca, as well as its teaching and research staff, will be able to access the bibliographic, periodical, and documentary collections of the COAIB Library for exclusively academic and research purposes.
This access is conceived as a fundamental support for the preparation of final degree projects, final master’s projects, doctoral studies and research projects.
De manera recíproca, los arquitectos colegiados en el COAIB y sus familias que acrediten estar cursando estudios académicos podrán hacer uso de las bibliotecas adscritas a la Universitat de Mallorca, ampliando así las posibilidades de consulta y estudio y favoreciendo el intercambio de conocimiento entre el ámbito universitario y el profesional.
The agreement includes the participation of the COAIB (Official Association of Architects of the Balearic Islands) in defining and developing the future Architecture programs offered by the University of Mallorca. The professional association will be part of the committee drafting the academic programs once the new university has established its faculty, contributing its experience and knowledge of professional practice. Furthermore, the COAIB may propose its registered architects who meet the legal requirements to join the faculty of undergraduate or master’s degree programs related to architecture.
The agreement also includes specific measures to support training, such as a 15 percent discount on tuition fees for courses offered by the University of Mallorca for members of the COAIB (Official Association of Architects of the Balearic Islands) and their families. This measure reflects the commitment to facilitating access to higher education and continuing professional development, and to promoting the ongoing updating of knowledge in the field of architecture.
It also provides for the establishment of procedures for the academic recognition of continuing education provided by the COAIB, so that it can be taken into account for the purpose of credit recognition in the university field.
The collaboration between both institutions also extends to the cultural and academic sphere through sponsorship and participation in activities, conferences and events related to common interests, thus reinforcing the social and cultural projection of architecture in the Balearic Islands.
The agreement will have an initial term of four years, with the possibility of extension for an additional period, and will have a monitoring committee made up of representatives of both entities, responsible for ensuring its correct application, resolving possible interpretative doubts and proposing complementary measures that contribute to the fulfillment of the established objectives.
The dean of the Official College of Architects of the Balearic Islands, Bernat Nadal, has valued the agreement as “an opportunity as a starting point to actively contribute to the training of future generations of architects from an integrated academic and professional perspective in collaboration with universities that are willing to do so.”
According to him, “the participation of the COAIB in the definition of the study programs will allow the accumulated experience of professional practice and the current demands of the discipline to be transferred to the university environment.”
Finally, the president of ADEMA, Diego González, emphasized that this agreement “represents an important step in launching a university project connected to professional practice and the real needs of the region.” In this regard, he underlined that “having the experience and expertise of the Official College of Architects of the Balearic Islands in designing architecture programs will allow us to offer rigorous, up-to-date training aligned with professional practice.”
With the signing of this agreement, the University of Mallorca and the Official College of Architects of the Balearic Islands consolidate a strategic alliance aimed at improving the quality of university education, promoting research and placing future students at the center of an academic structure connected with the professional and cultural environment of architecture.
