The ADEMA University School has been selected to present the results of pioneering research on the application of Artificial Intelligence in predicting the healing of apical periodontitis at the 2nd World Symposium on Artificial Intelligence in Dentistry, organized by the Harvard University School of Dental Medicine, which will take place on November 14 and 15, 2025.

This international symposium brings together researchers, academics, and industry representatives to share advances and insights on the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) and precision medicine on oral, dental, and craniofacial health. Harvard University, a global leader in scientific innovation and ranked number one in Shanghai for its research strengths, will host this landmark event in the field of dentistry.

Catalina Bennasar, a researcher and professor at ADEMA, will present the results of a study that applies Deep Learning techniques to predict the progression of apical periodontitis, achieving greater accuracy than traditional diagnoses made by dental professionals. This work represents a step forward from the research team’s first participation in this forum in 2023, when they presented a Machine Learning-based model capable of learning patterns from clinical data provided by specialists.

The research team at ADEMA University School, led by Professor Catalina Bennasar, includes Professors Dr. Pere Riutord, Joan Obrador, Raúl Cuesta, Antoni Nadal, and Dr. Sebastiana Arroyo. Professor Bennasar explains, “The new study uses Deep Learning algorithms capable of identifying and extracting features directly from raw data, such as radiographic images, allowing for the generation of more accurate and autonomous predictive models.” Furthermore, the research group plans to extend this methodology to other oral pathologies and treatments.

The president of the Research Advisory Board and head of the Bachelor in Dentistry program at ADEMA, Dr. Pere Riutord, stated that “the selection of our work by Harvard University represents an international recognition of enormous value, placing our institution at the forefront of research in Artificial Intelligence applied to oral health.” Riutord added that “Artificial Intelligence and precision medicine are transforming the way we understand, diagnose, and treat oral diseases, enabling earlier detection and more personalized treatment planning.”

The selection by Harvard reaffirms ADEMA’s commitment to applied research, technological innovation, and academic excellence in the field of oral health, consolidating its position as a leader in the use of Artificial Intelligence in Dentistry and demonstrating the international impact of its research lines.

The ADEMA University School is an international leader in the application of new technologies in Health Sciences, a pioneer in the use of state-of-the-art 3D haptic virtual simulation. This technology is used to train future dentists in oral surgery, restoration, endodontics, and prosthodontics. It enables highly complex preclinical practice, supervised by specialists, in both undergraduate and master’s programs, facilitating comprehensive training geared towards clinical excellence.
